Police say a cage will be lowered underground at shaft 11 in Stilfontein this morning to verify reports by community volunteers that there are no longer any illegal miners underground.
The volunteers reported that there are no illegal miners underground, apart from some human remains that they could not manage to bring to the surface.
Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says they will only be able to verify this in the morning, after lowering a cage underground.
A total of 246 illegal miners who are still alive were brought to the surface from Monday to Wednesday and a total of 78 bodies were retrieved in that period.
