Police find crystal meth during a crime raid.
Authorities say they have recovered drugs including dagga and crystal meth during a crime prevention operation in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.
Illicit cigarettes and alcohol were also confiscated during the raid at the Midrand shopping centre.
Johannesburg’s Public Safety MMC, Mgcini Tshwaku, led the joint operation that included the city’s law enforcement unit following a tip-off.
He says some hair salons around Midrand are being used as a front to sell drugs.
“We’ve formed sort of – I can call them informers – guys that are just watching over and check what is happening. We’re watching the watchers as well. We’re doing our undercover work. We know that most of the shops here are not complying with the bylaws. We got a tipoff on that [non-compliance with bylaws] and with the drugs. We got crystal meth, illegal alcohol, illegal cigarettes and the money. This is the tip of the iceberg,” says Tshwaku.
He has called on business to comply with the bylaws.
“The only thing is that we don’t want to stop people’s businesses. What we say to people is they must comply with the laws. Some people don’t even understand what a bylaw is. So, if they want to open a shop, they must contact the city, we’re here to help,” he adds.
