Police seek families of nine victims of KwaNoxolo tavern shooting

Police say they are still trying to trace some of the families of the nine people who were shot and killed at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal.

Ten other people were injured in the attack, which took place on Sunday morning.

Police have launched a manhunt for about 10 suspects, with police visibility intensified in the area.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown.

Crime prevention forum Mzikayifani Luthuli is calling on community members to work with police to find the suspects.

Meanwhile, the owner of the kwaNoxolo Tavern in Bekkersdal on Gauteng’s West Rand says she fears for her life following the deadly mass shooting at her tavern.

Police say ten suspects arrived at the tavern in a white Toyota Quantum and a silver sedan before shooting randomly inside the premises and continuing to fire as they fled the scene.

Tavern owner Nanesi Matwa says the incident has left her traumatised saying she’s struggling to sleep at night.

“I’m struggling to sleep because I’m scared, I barely slept at night, and my heart feels heavy. I don’t think I’ll be able to continue operating this tavern, it feels overwhelming. Facing families will be especially difficult, because I know some of them personally. I understand that this isn’t my fault, but that doesn’t make it easier. I’m scared for my life and I’m seriously considering leaving this place.”
