Police speak to an illegal miner after resurfacing from underground.
Police and South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members in Stilfontein near Klerksdorp, North West, continue to monitor the emergence of illegal miners from shafts in the area.
Community members say they managed to help five illegal miners to the surface, in the past few days.
They say illegal miners have had access to water but no food since Monday and have been sending letters requesting to be assisted with food.
“That thing pains us a lot because you must understand that we are being helped by the donors, whatever we want we must wait for them to come and donate something so that we can send something to the people. But this week since we started we have never sent food down, since from the past week because every donation we got we gave it to the people. But for now, we are still waiting for the donation to come and assist us with something so that we can feed the people,” says Community representative Johannes Qankase.
