Police rescue Ethiopian businessman kidnapped in Norwood

Police have rescued an Ethiopian businessman kidnapped outside a restaurant in Norwood on Sunday.

One of the kidnappers was shot dead and five others arrested. Police say the victim was inside a house in Kensington, Johannesburg where a shoot-out ensued with the kidnappers.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says police seized four illegal firearms, including an AK47 and recovered items belonging to the victim, luxury watches and jewelry. She added that the police made big recoveries in the past week.

“In the past week, police have also recovered 50 hijacked and stolen vehicles, just last week police destroyed R340 million worth of drugs in Cape Town, these were drugs that were seized during operations. In the last three years police have destroyed drugs worth R5.2 billion. A breakdown of the firearms that were seized this week, 112 handguns, the majority of which were seized in the Western Cape, which is 38, 25 rifles, 13 shotguns and five homemade guns were seized.”
