Police officers killed in line of duty to be remembered on Sunday

Police officers who have died in the line of duty in the last twelve months will be remembered at the National Police Commemoration Day on Sunday, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The Police and Prison Civil Rights Union (Popcru) says it is disheartening that families of fallen heroes and heroines are paraded annually before the public, with minimal change to their conditions.

Popcru spokesperson Richard Mamabolo says its members demand urgent and practical steps to reduce police killings.

“Despite the existence of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), most members agree that its benefits remain inadequate. The death grant of R250 000 unchanged since inception cannot sustain the families of fallen officers. Particularly in supporting children’s education and basic needs. Attending ceremonies that annually add names to the wall is not enough,” adds Mamabolo.
