Police monitor Stilfontein illegal miners’ retrieval operation

Police in Stilfontein in the North West continue to monitor the operation of retrieving illegal miners from shaft 11.

North West Police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, says more than 80 undocumented illegal miners have been deported to their home countries, which include Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Mokgwabone says, “Approximately 1 450 illegal miners have been arrested since 18 August 2024 to date, with most of them having been arrested between October and November 2024. The suspects are mainly from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Malawi. At this stage, less than 20 South Africans have been arrested as illegal miners.” – Reporting by Gontse Sekhantso.
