Police leadership conflicts hamper efforts to combat crime: Booysen

The former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss, Johan Booysen, says that conflicts within the South African Police Service (SAPS) leadership are hindering efforts to combat crime.

He was commenting on the testimonies of KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkwanazi and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.

Booysen, who testified against former police minister Nathi Nhleko before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry, says that watching the Madlanga Commission feels familiar.

He says, “Unfortunately, in my view, nothing has changed since 2011. I was in a very similar situation where there was political interference by the then Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa and incidentally, the acting national commissioner at the time was General Mkhwanazi.”

Booysen says, “At the time, consequent to a newspaper article, an entire unit was also closed down without a proper investigation being conducted, and dockets were taken away at the time, dockets relating to the (Police Crime Intelligence head Richard) Mdluli investigation. So it’s almost a case of déjà vu for me.”
