Police have launched a manhunt for gunmen who shot dead five men in Mfuleni in the Western Cape. On Sunday officers were called to the Madikizela informal settlement where they found the bodies of five men aged between 19 and 30 in a shack.

The police’s Serious and Violent Crimes Investigating Unit in the Western Cape are following up on leads as they search for the gunmen.

Police Commissioner in the Western Cape, General Thembisile Patekile, says the shooting may be related to extortion incidents in the area.

“The descriptions that we have been given, we are following those descriptions and we are appealing to the community to assist us so that we can solve this case. It comes as a shock to us to find these killings in this area which has not been an issue for some time.”

Spokesperson for family members of the deceased, Zandisile Marawu, says they are struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“We are here to listen to what has happened. It is very painful for the mother. The mother of one of the children that died is my wife’s sister. She is also here, but she is unable to speak because of the hurt and also not knowing what she will do to make sure her son is buried,” says Marawu.

Police say they will deploy more officers and resources in the area to clamp down on crime.
