Gauteng police have refuted claims that one of the two suspects shot and killed by police in Parys was a police officer. According to the authorities, the suspect in question was a former police official who was dismissed from the service earlier this year.
The suspects were allegedly involved in a series of blue-light robberies on the R59 and other roads between Gauteng and the Free State.
They reportedly hijacked victims and held them captive for hours while withdrawing large sums of money from their bank accounts.
The suspects died when their vehicle collided with a fence during a shootout with police. Officers recovered two unlicensed firearms with ammunition, SAPS uniforms, blue lights, sirens, and false registration plates.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson, Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, says police are closely monitoring blue-light crimes in the province.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspects have been involved in blue light robberies happening on the R59 and other roads between Gauteng and Free State provinces. They would hijack their victims and kidnap them for hours while withdrawing sums of money from the victims’ bank accounts. The police will continue to intensify their efforts to crackdown on these robberies.”
