Police captain accused of raping trainee granted bail

A police captain accused of raping a trainee has been granted bail of R8 000 by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that the 59-year-old officer threatened to serve the 20-year-old with a misconduct letter for failing to salute him if she did not sleep with him.

The alleged assault happened at the Pretoria West SAPS Training College in May this year.

The South African Police Service member also faces a sexual assault charge after another victim came forward.

The court found that the police officer is not a flight risk. In terms of his bail conditions, he may not visit the college and must report to the nearest police station twice a week. His lawyer Andrew Maoba says the allegations are baseless.

“Those allegations are unsubstantiated. First of all, the list of state witnesses has not yet been availed to us by the state, as the defence. So, we don’t even know at this stage as to who the state witnesses are going to be. That is number one. Number two, the bail conditions are addressing that possibility should my client be inclined to intimidate the witnesses, which is an unlikely word, because obviously he wouldn’t want to forfeit his bail money.”
