Shaft 11 in Stilfontein where illegal miners were evacuated.
Police in the North West are calling on relatives of the deceased illegal miners – who were retrieved two weeks ago at Buffelsfontein Gold Mine’s Shaft 11 in Stilfontein – to help with the identification of the bodies.
The government-funded rescue operation retrieved 78 bodies.

It also retrieved 246 others who were still alive. Two of them lost their lives at the local hospital.
Community volunteers retrieved nine bodies last year, adding up to the total number of 89 deceased illegal miners.
“As part of ongoing investigations into the inquest dockets regarding 78 bodies retrieved at Buffelsfontein Gold Mine’s Shaft No. 11 during the Mine Rescue Operation, relatives of the deceased are requested to come forward for the identification process. Family members are requested to meet with the investigation team at Stilfontein Police Station on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 08:00 and 15:00,” says police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone.
