Police arrest 35 undocumented foreign nationals in N1 roadblock

Gauteng Traffic Police have arrested 35 undocumented foreign nationals on the N1 southbound at Pumulani Plaza, on Friday morning, during a major roadblock.

Officers stopped a minibus and found four undocumented passengers before spotting another 15-seater attempting to make a U-turn to evade police.

The vehicle was chased and stopped, and police discovered 31 passengers inside the overloaded and unroadworthy minibus, all without legal documents.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson, Sello Maremane says the driver and passengers are now facing charges, including overloading, driving an unroadworthy vehicle and being in the country illegally.

“The minibus was also unroadworthy. The driver and all passengers have been detained at Senoville Police Station facing the following charges: passenger overloading, driving an unroadworthy minibus, and being illegal immigrants in the country. We would like to appeal to our foreign nationals to ensure that they have legal documents when visiting our country,” says Maremane.

He says they will continue to fight lawlessness on the ground, especially passenger overloading, failing to wear seatbelts, as well as speeding.
