Plans on track to complete Hammanskraal water project: Mayor

City of Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya says they are on track to ensure that the three phases of the Magalies Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant are completed on time for the remainder of Hammanskraal residents to receive clean, drinkable water.

The Mayor visited the area yesterday where some residents got the green light to consume the water. The rest of the community is expected to get clean water by June 2025.

Moya says they have learnt a lot from the first phase of the project.

“Everyone who is supposed to be supplied by the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant those areas, all of them should have clean drinkable water flowing from their taps, that is the aim. Next week we are going back to Magalies Water where we are going to continue to with the oversite visits that we normally do with Magalies and the Department of Water and Sanitation. Because what we have decided is that we don’t have to wait for deadlines. If we are able to accelerate some things we should be able to do so. We have learnt a lot of things from this module. I think we are wiser and the teams have identified some of the risks that were not in our original plan.”

Moya has warned residents against selling water to those that are yet to receive clean water. This is after claims that some of the residents have been selling water to their neighbours.

“Remember as the City, we have scrapped debt for water, for the 20 years with an understanding that the residents must start paying for water. So, if they give that water to other people, they must understand that it is going to come through their bill. They must understand that implication. We are expecting residents of Hammanskraal that are getting drinkable water to pay for the services that they are consuming.”
