The ANC in the Western Cape is to approach both the National Ministry of Cooperative Governance and the National Council of Provinces to set aside the dissolution of the Knysna Council.
Last week, Western Cape Minister of Local Government Anton Bredell announced plans to put the Knysna Municipality under administration after years of service delivery issues and allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption.
Knysna Mayor Thando Matika responded in a statement saying they disagreed with this course of action, as it was not in the best interest of the town or residents.
Provincial ANC spokesperson Khalid Sayed says, “We have until September 27 to object and ensure that the national minister of Cogta and the NCOP reject this decision. We are confident at a national level, whether it’s at a level of the Executive or the NCOP, this decision will be rejected. The Knysna municipality has shown immense improvement and great stability in the past few months.”
