Place SAFA board under administration: Former SAFA NEC member

Former NEC member at the South African Football Association (SAFA) Lefore Lerefolo says the association’s board should be placed under administration.

This follows the arrest of SAFA president Danny Jordaan and two co-accused yesterday.

Jordaan, alongside SAFA CFO Gronie Gluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling, face charges of fraud and theft amounting to R1.3 million.

The three appeared at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge, east of Johannesburg.

They were granted R20 000 bail each.

Lerefolo says based on the recent allegations, it’s clear that the organisation’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is dysfunctional.

“If internally such serious issues are raised, we would expect that SAFA deals with it and tells the country something. But at the end of the day, we have not heard anything from the accounting body or the SAFA NEC,” he said.

Lerefolo has accused SAFA of not addressing issues brought to its attention.

“In 2018, these matters were raised. Beyond that, there was a raid at SAFA, but we have not heard from the SAFA NEC. Has there been an investigation? Has the ethics committee looked at this? Is there a report so that we can talk about issues that come from professional bodies meant to do that? That has not happened. That is the dysfunction,” says Lerefolo.
