PKTT disbandment was Mchunu’s directive: Nkabinde

The Police Minister’s Chief of Staff, Cedrick Nkabinde, says to his knowledge the directive to disband the Political Killings Task Team, was written by Minister Senzo Mchunu who is currently on special leave.

Nkabinde was testifying Ad Hoc Committee in Cape Town investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system.

Nkabinde told the committee he was instructed by Mchunu to forward the directive to the relevant people, including his special advisor, advocate Vusi Pikoli.

During an exchange with evidence leader, advocate Norman Arendse, Nkabinde said Mchunu wrote the directive with no assistance or involvement from anyone else.

Evidence leader: “So before directive was sent, apparently there was some exchange, and maybe advocate Pikoli to make some changes and comments … is that right?”

Nkabinde: “Yes.”

Evidence leader: “Were any other persons involved?”

Nkabinde: “Not at all.”

The committee will resume its hearings today, with testimony from Lieutenant General Molefe Fani.

Fani is the Divisional Commissioner for Supply Chain Management for the South African Police Service.
