An Orlando Pirates’ fan branch has paid tribute to former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa on the 11th anniversary of his death.
Meyiwa was shot at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s parental home in Vosloorus, Gauteng, on the 26th of October 2014. He died later in hospital.
Five men are on trial in the High Court, in Pretoria for his murder. The fan branch, named after the soccer star, paid their respects to his family at uMlazi, south of Durban.
They also showered them with gifts. The supporters say this day brings painful memories especially since justice has not yet been served.
‘So, when it’s about Christmas time we know that Senzo Meyiwa would’ve bought presents for his family. We don’t want his mother to feel lonely. We are showering her with these gifts out of love as the Senzo branch as the Orlando Pirates supporters to say let our mother have a wonderful festive season. This is while we are celebrating his life but we are saying to her that even on this day which is 11 years without justice but she must know that we are here,” says a supporter.
“I am happy that I’m part of this. I take her as my mother. She does cry out if she doesn’t have groceries and I always come and give her. It’s very painful. She says she doesn’t even watch TV, I myself also don’t like to watch TV whenever they talk about Senzo. To me it doesn’t make sense because how can it take 11 years with no justice?” says another supporter.
Meanwhile, Meyiwa’s mother Ntombifuthi Meyiwa spoke about how difficult life has been after losing her son, who was the family’s sole breadwinner.
She says she’s also haunted by the fact that his murder trial has dragged on for so long.

“It’s very painful. I’ve asked for food, I’m not mentioning anybody’s name but God in heaven knows even Senzo where he is knows it’s been a struggle. I don’t really ask for money all I’ve been asking is for food. Just want to say thank you to all the supporters for what they’ve done,” she adds.
