Pirates came into this match with an equal number of points as defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, but Sundowns were top of the standings by virtue of a superior goal difference.
Bafana Bafana striker Evidence Makgopa broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute after receiving a pinpoint pass from Relebohile Mofokeng.
In the second half, Oswin Appollis provided the final pass for Pirates’ second goal, scored by Patrick Maswanganyi, 14 minutes before regulation time.
