The Communication Workers’ Union (CWU), alongside Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Gauteng have handed over a memorandum of demands to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
The group staged a picket outside the corporation’s headquarters in Auckland Park over the de-registration of CWU at the SABC.
They are demanding the reinstatement of dismissed and suspended shop stewards, fair pay, and an investigation into management’s decisions.
They are also calling on the Ministry and Parliament to expedite the processing of the SABC Bill and the establishment of a sustainable and reliable funding model for the public broadcaster.
CWU leader, Sthembiso Mkhwanazi, says they also want clarity on who approved only 50% of the 2023-2024 back-pay agreement.
“We call for an investigation into unilateral decisions by management, including the Group HR, to implement only 50% of the 2023-2024 back pay that was fought for and signed between the SABC and some members of the CWU task team. We demand to know who, on behalf of CWU, gave the go-ahead to sign the 50% deal with management for the 2023 back pay.”
