Photsaneng residents in NW demand jobs from Clover Alloy Mine

Residents of Photsaneng village in Rustenburg in the North West have marched to the local mining operation, Clover Alloy, to demand amongst other things, jobs for local community members.

The operation was previously run by Lanxess and was repeatedly disrupted by locals, demanding jobs. They say they are surrounded by mining operations, which have failed to create jobs for locals or improve their living conditions.

One of the residents, Tiny Mohale says the mine must adhere to their social and labour plans.

“What we need from Clover is for them to hire local youth and work with local businesses. If you can have a look inside now, there are no young people working as permanent staff. They only took companies and people from outside,” says Mohale.

Omphemetse Komane from the Photsaneng Business Forum says they are also being side-lined.

There’s an open cast that side, that works. There are also dump trucks and ADT. There is all the machinery needed but most of the time the people who own and operate the machinery are people from outside Photsaneng, or the province. So we are a frustrated business forum and we need answers,” adds Komane.
