‘People must heed advice on ways to mitigate climate change’

Climate expert Prof. Walter Musakwa says people have no choice but to adapt as temperatures around the world continue to rise.

The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service’s recent studies indicate that for the past 10 months temperatures have been high although there has been a sharp drop in the final two months.

Experts say this year will also be the first in which the planet will be more than 0.5 degrees hotter than in the pre-industrial age.

The University of Johannesburg’s Musakwa says people should heed authorities’ advice on ways to mitigate climate change.

Masakwa says, “It affects people’s lives negatively, particularly from a livelihood perspective, people won’t be able to undertake livelihood which they are used to for example agriculture, it becomes difficult to carry out farming because of high temperatures and lack of water which will lead to crops stress.”- Reporting by Avhapfani Munyai.
