Pedestrian killed, 19 injured in two separate KZN crashes

Two separate vehicle crashes in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday morning have claimed the life of a pedestrian and left 19 people injured.

Advanced Life support paramedics say in the first incident, a taxi and a bakkie collided on the intersection of Umlaas road and the R56. Eighteen passengers in the vehicles were injured and transported to hospital.

Garrith Jamieson from ALS paramedics describes what happened at the second fatal collision an hour later at the intersection of Ottos Bluff and Dr Chota Motala roads.

“It is believed that a vehicle and a taxi had collided in the junction before the taxi lost control and veered off the road colliding with a pedestrian. Paramedics assessed the pedestrian, a male believed to be in his forties, however he had sustained fatal injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene. The light motor vehicle driver had sustained moderate injuries and was transported to hospital.”
