FlySafair customers wait in long lines at the airport as some of the flights are cancelled.
FlySafair has had to cancel 26 flights which account for 13% of its operations amid the wage dispute with pilots.
The pilots have rejected the airline’s 5,7% wage increase offer, sticking to their demand of a 10,5% hike.
The airline insists that it has been negotiating in good faith under the process that is led by the CCMA.
“The reality is that’s a 10% increase on basic pay. Pilots remuneration is quite complex. There are allowances that are considered; there are bonuses and when one looks at the full cost to company increase that they are demanding its 21,1%. These are individuals who are competitively paid compared to other airlines. They are in the top 1% of earners, the captain will earn R1,8million to R2,3 million a year. So, it’s understandable that a 21,1% increase is economically not viable,” says Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair Kirby Gordon.
