Parties leaving GNU reverse gains: Analyst

1 minute

Political Analyst Dr Levy Ndou says any political party in the Government of National Unity (GNU) that decides to leave would reverse their own gains.

This as the much anticipated meeting between the leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) will take place on Saturday, following a fallout over VAT hike proposal.

DA voted against the budget and also launched a legal challenge against the implementation of the VAT hike.

Ndou says parties must remember their mandates instead of quitting the GNU.

“Parties contest elections in order to be in government, and I think these parties that are in the Government of National Unity are excited that they’ve been able to achieve one thing that of being in government, that of being in charge of certain departments.

The Democratic Alliance in my view has got a much bigger project that started long time ago, that of ensuring that one day in the future, they should be packed or they should be running government and indeed the national government.

And if they therefore decide to leave the government of national unity, it can be a huge blow to their support base and to their own project.”
