Intercape Bus on the road.
Intercape long-distance bus service has, through its legal representative, called on Parliament to intervene in the continued attacks on its buses. The long-haul bus company’s legal representative, Advocate Kate Hofmeyr, appeared before the Police Portfolio Committee in Parliament to discuss the matter.
Hofmeyr told shocked MPs that after more than 200 cases – including the murder of a bus driver – have been opened by Intercape, but SAPS has done nothing to solve anything.
She called on Parliament to intervene.
“The judicial system has stepped up, it’s told police what to do, but nothing has been done. We say to you (it’s) time for Parliament to play its role in our constitutional democracy, to shine light of public accountability on those who must account for that inaction,” said Hofmeyr.
However, Police have told MPs that they are implementing the safety plan for long-haul bus operators, as directed by the Eastern Cape High Court in Makanda.
They say 11 people have been arrested, out of 76 cases they are investigating. The plan includes escorting buses on some of the routes.
Deputy Police Minister, Polly Boshielo, says with limited resources it is a difficult task.
“On some of demand to escort, too much strain on us, but (we) can do strategic points then others will also want to be escorted, taxis and other buses also want to be escorted,” says Boshielo.
