Parliament Committee receives 250 submissions to review Constitution

Parliament’s Joint Constitutional Review Committee says it received around 250 submissions seeking to review the Constitution by Friday. However, the committee expects that between then and the deadline, which was midnight Saturday night, a flurry of last-minute submissions were sent.

The committee is now tasked with sifting through all the submissions and deliberating on them.

“The Constitution belongs to all South Africans and it must keep up with the times. It’s been amended 21 times and it can be amended again. There are often very good reasons for amending it, and so each submission is read properly and thoroughly, it’s evaluated, and they are sorted into definitely nots, maybes, and definitelys, and then we work through those,” explains Committee Co-Chair, Glynnis Breytenbach.
