The fire in the Hemel and Aarde Valley at Hermanus in the Overstrand Municipality in the Western Cape that broke out yesterday on the mountainside and spread towards Hawston has been contained.

Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill says the roads between Hawston and Fisherhaven are open to motorists.

He says the roads were closed due to the fire that spread towards the road causing an excessive amount of smoke.

O’Neil says they are currently monitoring the area for flare-ups.

Firefighters honoured

In June, firefighters who fought 119 fires that broke out in the Table Mountain National Park during the first half of the year were honoured for their dedication.

Table Mountain National Park management said the Castle Rock fire which lasted for over a week was among the toughest they’ve encountered.
