Department of FILE: Correctional Services inmates attend an event.
Correctional Services Deputy Minister Lindiwe Ntshalintshali says the challenge of overcrowding in the country’s correctional centres is growing annually.
Ntshalintshali says this in Parliament during the debate on the status of overcrowding in prisons.
The debate called by African National Congress (ANC) MP Samuel Moela was on addressing overcrowding in South African Correctional Centres as a Human Rights Imperative.
Ntshalintshali says the number of inmates is far more than the number of beds available.
She says, “Our correctional facility has housed 168 680 inmates against the approved bed space of 107 067 resulting in an occupants level of 158%% and overcrowding of 58%.”
