Over half of KwaZulu-Natal schools not ready to reopen: Sadtu

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) is warning that more than half of the schools in KwaZulu-Natal are not ready to reopen this week.

A survey conducted by the union among 247 school principals shows that 54% of the schools do not have money, stationary, textbooks or cleaning materials.

In Umkhanyakude District on the province’s north coast, nearly 70 per cent of the schools are deemed not ready to start the new school calendar on Wednesday.

Provincial Secretary Nomarashiya Caluza says the schools in previously disadvantaged communities are the worst impacted.

“Majority of our schools are no fee schools and learners must just come empty handed for them to get stationery, textbooks and all other things from the school. Those things are not there. The stationery is not there, they do not have money for electricity and water. So, those are basic, basic things either than the that they do not have.”
