Western Cape police say they’ve arrested more than 700 alleged gangsters and seized hundreds of illegal firearms over recent months.
Additional officers have been deployed to hotspot areas, including Mitchell’s Plain, Mfuleni, Delft, Bishop Lavis, Manenberg, among others.
There’s been an alarming increase in ongoing gun violence across various communities in Cape Town.
National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says with additional police officers deployed to the city of Cape Town, officers on the ground working with other law enforcement agencies have made inroads in disrupting organised gang-related activity.
“We’ve arrested about 54 947 suspects for being in possession of drugs for the last seven months. We also have those dealing in drugs, 2 296 arrests. Gang-related murders, 96 arrests. Gang-related attempted murders, we had 60 suspects arrested. And I think it’s quite commendable that we also have seized 1 565 illegal firearms with 39 371 rounds of ammunition.”
