Over 700 arrested in Diepsloot during Operation Shanela

More than 700 suspects have been arrested through the police’s Operation Shanela in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.

The area is known for its high crime rate.

Police say more than one hundred people were apprehended for GBV-related crimes, 28 for being in the country illegally and 13 for driving under the influence.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni is certain that the Diepsloot police station is well equipped to deal with the amount of crime in the area.

“We are once again back in Diepsloot. We know for a fact that the area is troubled by your murders, your assaults in terms of robbery, your car hijackings and, of course, the property-related thefts of motor vehicles. I must just say that we are here so that we can strengthen the hand of the Station Commander and the District Commissioner.” – Reporting by Xoliswa Makhikhi.
