Over 490 drunk drivers have been arrested since the 1st of December to date on the Mpumalanga roads. This was revealed by the MEC for Community, Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie during a festive Season road safety campaign at Komatipoort.

There is a low number of vehicles on the roads, compared to the same time, last year.

Vehicles were stopped and searched for various reasons. So far, over 100 000 vehicles have been stopped and searched on Mpumalanga roads.

Traffic is relatively low on the roads. Those stopped and searched seem to have been complying with traffic laws.

According to the MEC for Community Safety, the province has reported fewer fatalities compared to last year.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Jackie Macie says, ”As Mpumalanga, we are doing relatively well from the first of January to this date today in terms of our operation. We were able to stop over 100 000 cars during stop and search. We have issued out offences – over 18 000 tickets. We have arrested over 495 drunk and driving. We are doing pretty well in that regard.”

Some drivers coming from Mozambique were also stopped and searched at the roadblock. They had this to say.

”Traffic is very bad today. The police are nice and at the border, there are long queues. Very long queues,” says one driver.

Another one adds, “I am from Maputo, I am going to Malelane to buy some food because we don’t have petrol and meat. So we are going there to see what we can get to eat on the road we are travelling right everything is fine.”

Macie also raises concern about the behaviour of motorists involved in accidents.

“If you analyse those incidents where we have registered crashes you will notice it is dangerous passing of other vehicles on a very dangerous road, overtaking on barrel line, over speeding.”

Traffic authorities say traffic is expected to rise from Sunday.
