Over 4 000 suspected ghost workers identified among govt employees


National Treasury says a ghost worker audit has identified 4 323 suspicious cases in the PERSAL system and that a verification process is under way.

The department says employees who cannot be physically verified will have their salaries withheld and their employment status suspended.

It says compensation of employees accounts for nearly one-third of consolidated expenditure

National Treasury says its programme, allowing government employees to retire early without having to face penalties, is expected to make a saving of R2.6 billion in this financial year from the 7 687 applications approved in its first phase

The National Treasury says R3.7 billion has been allocated to departmental baselines for the Early Retirement Programme in the 2025/26 and 2026/27 financial years.
