The Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has expressed outrage over allegations that 27 of the 97 South African Police Service (SAPS) members accused of sexual violence nationally are from the province.
The allegations are in the police watchdog Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (IPID) 2024-2025 report.
The committee says swift action must be taken against those found guilty of misconduct.
Committee chairperson Bandile Masuku says, “We have already requested a report, a comprehensive report, because we do usually get a report from IPID quarterly on the cases that they’re dealing with. But on this one, we have asked for a comprehensive report that will cover all the actions and where the cases are. The investigations are ongoing. We just hope to see and get the progress on how far they are. And we do acknowledge that the IT has got a very long list of deadlocks and it’s something that they have to prioritise these types of crimes.”
