Gauteng police check motorist vehicle during Safer Festive Season campaign.
Gauteng Police Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni says over twenty-six thousand offenders have been arrested by police for numerous criminal acts such as murder, car-hijacking, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition since October this year.
Mthombeni revealed these stats during the Safer Festive Season operation in Germiston, east of Johannesburg, on Tuesday.
“Until now, we have arrested over 26 744, of which murders are 101, attempted murders over 104, not forgetting possession of a licensed firearm, which we have since got 73. The liquor outlets, as you know, in the province for the past week, we were confronted with this situation of a mass shooting. We have since closed over 1,080 liquor outlets.”
