Over 2200 suspects arrested for GBV offences in August

Police say their fight against the scourge of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide is yielding results.

In August, which is observed annually as Women’s Month, 2284 suspects were arrested for sexually related offences, including rape, sexual assault, abduction, and attempted rape.

Police say there’s also been some notable convictions, including this week’s sentencing of Mozambican national Phethe Simiao to two life terms for the rape and murder of 6-year-old Amantle Semao in Soweto.

National police spokesperson Amanda Van Wyk says, “There are 176 FCF units across the country with a serial and electronic crime investigation unit on a national level and within each province. These specialised teams are mandated to investigate, trace and arrest perpetrators of sexual crimes, persons directed crimes and illegal removal of persons. These successes are a testament to SAPS’ unwavering commitment to protect women, children and other vulnerable members of society.” – Reporting by Nomtsikelelo Mthabela.
