Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) have arrested over 160 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the arrests were made between the 21st and 27th of this month.

Fihla says the accused are expected to appear in court soon.

He further emphasises that driving under influence of alcohol is a serious offence that can lead to severe injuries, fatalities and legal repercussions.

“The JMPD urges all motorists to refrain from drinking and driving and to make responsible choices to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road. Alternative transportation options, such as e-hailing services or designated drivers, should always be considered,” says Fihla.
