Outgoing NDPP highlights expanded GBV victim support

Outgoing National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Shamila Batohi, says the authority has expanded support for victims of gender-based violence (GBV) through 66 Thuthuzela Care Centres nationwide, acknowledging that more still needs to be done.

Batohi made the remarks during her final media briefing as the NDPP at the NPA’s Annual Report for the 2024/25 financial year in Pretoria.

As South Africa continues to face alarmingly high levels of gender-based violence, Batohi says the centres aim to provide victims with support to navigate the justice system and recover from trauma.

“So other key achievements during this period, we’ve been working with our partners in government, and we’ve had innovative partnerships with the private sector, which has resulted in the acceleration and expansion of the thuthuzela care centres, which is a one-stop facility for support to victims on their road to becoming survivors of gender-based violence. There are 66 nationwide, and this is certainly not enough. We are also thinking ahead as the NPA, we developed our organised crime strategy. We all know that organised crime is morphing faster than any one of us would. And we adopted this strategy against over an organised crime, develop working with experts, and a harm reduction approach and focusses on holding the kingpins accountable, following the money, and not foot soldiers.”
