The Presidency announced the appointment last night.
Mothibi’s appointment will take effect on the first of next month, coinciding with the end of the current head, Shamila Batohi’s tenure.
OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage says Mothibi has the much-needed leadership skills that he believes Batohi lacked.
“We can see that Andy Mothibi has a lot of skill, especially the successes in the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). The question, though, is going to be are we going to see visible senior prosecutions within months. There’s a lot of information, by the way, as well as the cases and affidavits that SIU themselves have had built and forwarded onto the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). So he’s going to be able to take those up and we need to see action now because our disappointment in the NPA has fumbled cases, unprepared cases, and a lack of action,” says Duvenage.
He says that this would advance the matters that should have been in court a long time ago.
“We are talking about the architects of state capture and the kingpins,” he adds.
