Smart Tourism Information Centre launched at OR Tambo.
The Smart Tourism Visitor Information Centre has officially been launched at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng.
It is an interactive, paperless hub offering real-time information on South Africa’s diverse tourism, culture, and heritage across all nine provinces.
Speaking at the launch, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the initiative came at the perfect time as the country welcomed G20 delegates and international visitors for the holiday season.
“It’s perfect that we launch it today. It’s an information centre, but different from the old one with a lot of brochures and paper. This is all digital. So, it provides information and showcases all nine provinces. What people can do at the nine provinces, it deals with safety tips. If they don’t want to do it on the big screen, they can scan the QR code on their phone and leave. So, it’s all digital. That is how we have advanced and we hope that both internal and local visitors can use this facility.”

Airports Company South Africa’s (ACSA) Jabulani Khambule believes the future of tourism is digital and the newly launched centre is a true one-stop shop that is a gateway for everything the country has to offer.
Khambule says the visitors’ information centre is a milestone for ACSA and the planning took about six months…
“This is a very proud moment for us at ACSA, the launch of this VIC. It prides us with lots of joy because on behalf of our passengers, on behalf of our local travellers, it provides very safe, reliable, informative centre about what our country has to offer. For us, it’s key and exciting to have a facility like this, technologically advanced as it is and in line with what the world out there is offering to the international public.”
The department indicated that it was ready to welcome visitors from across the globe as they benefit from the G20 world leader’s summit.
