Cash In Transit Heist on the N2 between NPC and M1 Higginson Highway in Durban.
One person has been killed and several others injured during a cash-in-transit heist on the N2 in Durban near the Cement Factory this morning.
A cash-in-transit vehicle was allegedly forced off the road, landing on its roof on the center median. Multiple suspects reportedly blew up the vehicle and stole the cash.
Emergency services responded to multiple scenes on the N2 as other motorists got caught in the crossfire.
Traffic authorities have confirmed the full closure of the N2 Highway in the area.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedic spokesperson Garreth Jamieson says, “Paramedics found multiple casualties on the scene, and more ambulances were dispatched to assist. On the actual scene, paramedics treated three security officers for various injuries and were stabilised on the scene. On the same scene approximately 500 meters from the incident, three occupants in a bus traveling to work sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were stabilized.”
He adds: “The next location of the scene was on the Higginson Highway over the N2 bridge, where two people sustained gunshot wounds. The third incident occurred in the Silverglen Drive, Chatsworth area, where paramedics found multiple patients had been shot. Two females believed to be in their thirties, and a security officer sustained gunshot and assault wounds. Unfortunately, one female sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared deceased on the scene.”
The incident has caused significant disruption and raised concerns over the escalating violence linked to cash-in-transit heists, says Jamieson.
N2 will be closed for another 4hrs.
