One person has died following a shack fire that swept through the LA Rochelle informal settlement in Klapmats outside Cape Town, Saturday night.
Police spokesperson, FC Van Wyk, says the body of an unidentified man was found amongst the debris after the Fire Department extinguished the blaze.
He says the body was burned beyond recognition.
Van Wyk says the cause of the fire is not yet known.
Humanitarian Aid, Gift of the Givers, says they are providing aid to several communities in Cape Town following fires that gutted several shacks.
Spokesperson Ali Sablay says the first call for aid came from residents in Klapmats in Paarl, followed by residents of Gugulethu, on the Cape Flats, where about 80 people have been left displaced.
“Gift of the Givers has activated a full humanitarian response with additional resources deployed to Nomzamo at the request of community leaders. It has been a busy year in fire-related disasters for Gift of the Givers teams, and our teams have responded to over 80 fire incidents spread across the Western Cape.”
