Officials to respond to alleged racist incident at a school in George

District officials from the Western Cape Department of Education say they will respond to allegations of racism at York High School in George.

This comes after a learner was captured in a video using an American racial slur to refer to a black pupil.

The incident is the second of its kind in the region, following a similar event at a school in Knysna last week.

This morning department officials, the school principal and members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) met to discuss the situation.

The EFF’s Andile Marhawule has called for the accused learner to be removed from the school.

“The child that is affected and their family must be given psycho social support to help empower them because racism affects dignity, self-worth and the identity of the person. The department here refused us with the school policy and the documentation, we require to fast-track this. As a result, we ended up cutting the meeting and arranging another meeting which we is going to be scheduled at a further date,” says Marhawule.
