Off-duty soldier shot dead in Cape Flats

An off-duty soldier has been shot and killed in Delft South on the Cape Flats.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg says the 37-year-old man was shot multiple times and declared dead at the scene.

Twigg says the soldier was not part of Operation Prosper –  a year-long joint security initiative by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the time of the incident.

He says, “Upon arrival on the scene, officers found a 37-year-old male who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation”.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased is a member of the SANDF who was off duty at the time of the incident and has no link to Operation Prosper. The suspect(s) fled the scene and have not yet been arrested. Delft detectives are investigating a case of murder,” said Twigg.

In a separate incident, two suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition during raids in the Vrygrond informal settlement in Muizenberg.

Police say members followed up on information related to a shooting in Lavender Hill.

“The information led them to a premises in Vrygrond, where they searched the premises and found one person in the house. The members found a 9mm pistol hidden in a cupboard in the room. The suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm. The members searched another house in Trevor Siljeur Street, and arrested a 22-year-old suspect when they found four .38 Special rounds of ammunition in the house. He faces a charge for the illegal possession of ammunition,” Twigg said.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court once charged.
