The North West Transport Department has sent a strong warning to non-compliant scholar transport service suppliers that their contracts will be terminated.
This comes after the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) report found systemic failures in the scholar transport programme in the province after complaints about challenges, including not vetting drivers.
The SAHRC Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana has accused the departments of transport and education of failure to ensure a functional and safe scholar transport system.
Khwinana says, “The commission also found that the persistent and systematic failures in scholar transport were directly attributed to institutional shortcomings within the Department of Community Safety and Transport and the North West Department of Education, as these departments are jointly responsible for the planning, implementation and oversight of the programme.”
