Launch of the project
North West Department of Sports in partnership with North West University’s High Performance Institute of Sport, launched the Project 350 initiative in Potchefstroom.
The aim of the programme is to identity and prepare 350 or more elite athletes across all nine provinces to represent the country at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the US.
The North West is the first province to launch its provincial leg, it has already identified 20 athletes for the national programme.
MEC for Sports in North West, Virginia Tsotso Tlhapi says Project 350 aims to ensure athletes in the North West are given the necessary support.
“We saw that our athletes are suffering when they travel, when they want to train. There are so many challenges they are facing. As the department we said we want to come on board and make sure they come with the results we want as the province. We are giving them financial support, psychological support and we are also giving them medical support.”
