Numsa to meet Goodyear over plant closure dispute


The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is set to engage with tyre manufacturer, Goodyear, on key industry issues during the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers’ (NAACAM) Show, at the Boardwalk Convention Centre, in Gqeberha.

The event showcases the capabilities of the domestic automotive component manufacturing sector.

Speaking at the event, Numsa General Secretary, Irvin Jim, confirmed that discussions with Goodyear will form part of efforts to address challenges facing workers and the broader automotive manufacturing sector.

“The plant where we are facing a crisis with is Goodyear. They have decided to close. So, we will be meeting with them tomorrow,” says Jim.

He says that they are facing an arrogant employer would does not respect the workers who have served that company for years. He says they are being given the workers a lousy R50,000 as a lump sum as they part ways, which they are opposing.
