The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says as the year draws to an end, they realize that 2026 will not be an easy year as they approach the 12th national congress.
Union Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says in 2025 they demonstrated the capacity to lead, defend and advance the interests of workers under extremely hostile conditions.
She says they had to deal with an economy that is bleeding jobs.
“In 2025 this was reflected in our emphasis and call for, the closing of the apartheid wage gap and a fight for a living wage, improving workers socio-economic conditions to the collective bargaining and as a union we’re taking up a fight to build a developmental state which intervenes in the economy through an expansionary budget away from austerity measures. Looking ahead we do so with a sober realism that 2026 will not be an easy year and we will be convening the 12th national congress which places even greater responsibility for all members and staff to defend unity and democratic centralism and organisational cohesion.”
