NUM, SACP protest high electricity tariffs in Cape Town

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has strongly complained about electricity tariffs, in South Africa, during a march in Cape Town on Saturday morning.

NUM members have joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) in Bellville, in Cape Town, to protest against the tariffs.

The union’s National Energy Sector Co-ordinator, Khangela Baloyi, says communities are struggling to keep  up with electricity costs.

“The electricity prices are a problem. Costs are high. Most people don’t afford electricity as it is and with the trajectory that we are going, we will end up having the majority of people in South Africa not affording electricity,” says Baloyi.

Baloyi says it’s not a question of availability and accessibility of electricity but of affordability.

“We know unemployment (rate) is very high in South Africa. There are many people that are not working who depend on the R350,” adds Baloyi.
